Tales of Victory and Woe, Chapter Two
Tale of Victory
[This time, Hemingway short story style. Ahem.]
Dodgeball yesterday. Tie-breaking revenge victory domination!
(Er . . . is tie-breaking two words or one ?)

Tales of Victory and Woe, Chapter One
Tales of Woe
It didn't work out with Eric Larsen. We didn't see each other.
We were too tired to go camping. Also, Chelsea has mono woe.
Dodgeball season losing woe.
The knee is still inflamed with woe.
Losing goggles woe. Also, aquajogging woe.
Last day of FYE class woe. The Search for Islamic Order is all over. How will I survive without Responsible Lauren down the hall to remind me of assignments?
Missing the book return date by two hours. Now I must woe a month to cash in the old textbooks.
Red Sox 13, Rockies 1. (For my friends that actually care, because I do not: World Series woe.)
Feeding and lifestyle funding woe.
George has woe for me.

Tales of Victory
Generous friends victory! Jeff gave me one of his hockey sticks. I'm a lefty, who knew?
Medical victory! I can walk on the knee without limping. Also, Sammi gave me her knee brace.
Nocturnal victory! I got lots of sleep on Block Break. 15 hours on Friday.
Got into every one of my classes for this year. Preregistration victory!
Being right victory. There is a nickel arcade nearby. I was not making it up, hallmates!
Care package victory. Thanks NCL moms! (Though what was with all of the little notepads?)
Hockey on Tuesday. Hopefully a victory . . . .
HALLOWEEN! The gladiator-slash-Trojan war costume is fully operational. Spartan victory!

Eric
Sam Wasson
I just got word that Sam Wasson died in a car accident at 3:30 in the morning on Tuesday. He's a year older than me, going to LMU, and in the same tight circle of friends as Lauren Alcantar. We were in The Music Man together. So many of my friends and running teammates were close to him, and it's not fair. I remember him singing or playing the guitar for Lauren's memorial service in July. It's not fair that their group should have to lose another friend, especially Allison Francis who was best friends with both him and Lauren Alcantar. I don't see why that would have to happen. He was very unique and outrageously funny.
So if you see any of these people tell them I'm very very sorry:
Allison Francis, Jimmy Wilcox, Jake Gardner, Carrie Dunn, Erin Franey, Natalie Nourigat and most of the Carrie Scott friends, Ellen Nye, Beth Fagan, Rachel Wojo, Caitlin Cruickshank, Olivia Kingsley, Brendan Cleary, Charlie Neville, Tony Moneta, Kohle Kreitzberg, Sarah Rosenbloom, Blake Bye, Matt Peterson, Maddy Bennett, Aidan Willis, Mariel Wuilloud, and about a million other people. I could never hope to make so many loving friends.

Scholar of the Qur'an
I don't have time to write towards the end of block. Big paper, midterms. Ask me something about women, family planning, marriage, divorce, children, etc. and I can tell you what the Qur'an says about it, what the sunna and the hadith and shari'a have on it, what Egyptian law and reforms concern it, and as a bonus some of the following: the fiqh of the qadis (jurisprudence from Islamic jurists), fatawa issued by muftis, and the position of the four schools of law - Hanafi, Hanbali, Shafi'i, Maliki.
News: I'm running out of real money, I need all of my silly hats, it snowed yesterday, I need glucosamine+chondritin. Elaboration after Wednesday afternoon. Also, Hi Grandma.

Glucosamine and Chondritin
Jeff says that I should really try glucosamine and chondritin (sulphate) for my knee. I looked up some academic places, first Oxford's Clinical School: Glucosamine and chondritin for knee OA; then the U.S. National Institutes of Health: Efficacy of Glocosamine and Chondritin Sulfate May Depend on Level of Osteoarthritis Pain.
Seems like a legitimate option.

Southwestern Invite
Only this team could make a 8.5 hour drive not horrifically boring. The drive back, at least. Traveling to a meet is more tense and quiet.
It was a funny course, completely flat with one tree, and quite windy so that you couldn't tell that it was hot. It encircled a veterans' home/ex-psychiatric hospital.
I must confess, I was pretty exhausted before the trip even started. So the gun goes off - bang - and I knew that it was going to hurt. Half a mile into, I look up and see fully 200 girls diverge into two separate groups, half going to the left, and half going to the right. But they let us keep running for at least a whole mile before they stopped us, and said they would restart the race in 45 minutes.
Long story short, I was really tired and I didn't do my best and even though I had a terrific kick at the end I came in one second slower than the girl I was supposed to beat. Sorry family, no Conference, no Regionals. Maybe next year. (And please don't ask me what my time was.)
The ride back was pretty fun. We watched The Karate Kid and I decided that I love The Karate Kid. Later I'll describe my coach's weird traditions that held us up and that we aren't allowed to question and that constitute a major source of hilarity on the team.
We got back in record time anyway. I dashed into my hall to shower, and caught most everyone going out. Sammi gave me a red dress, the short kind with no waist. That's called Regency something.
I made it out in 15 minutes and Jeff waited behind for me. We found everyone in the "salsa room" but that was dying so we messed around in the "swing room" in Palmer (my Poli Sci building) but the lady singer was kind of bad. I ended up Jeff, Justin, and Sammi in the main tent's dance floor. Actually, I kind of divided my time between them and the XC team. Our circles were right next to each other, and I was between them, so I managed to dance with both of them simply by turning around.
Since I'm more of a visual person, I've drawn a Venn diagram to illustrate how it worked.
With all of the alumni hilariously hyper around us, a good time was had by all.

TO THE ARC!
School news: Oh man, we had the awesomest, most intense discussion on religion in general today. We just weren't stopping! It went from 9:30 to 10:45 and Bob had to cut us off to take a break.
XC news: If I take out one girl in the next meet, I'm going to conference and possibly NCAA regionals.
Dorm news: We got a new guy down the hall but I don't know his name yet; Justin got in a massive bike accident and broke his arm (also, he looks like a burn victim); Sammi's mom is going to visit and Sammi is going to have a car. You know what that means.

Individual Letters #2
Professor. Bob. Professor Bob. Mr Lee. Sir.
Today we had breakfast and class in Bob's living room for the second time. (I still feel funny calling my professor by his first name. Most of us kind of mumble instead of calling him anything.)
For the first time in this class we read nonfiction: Naguib Mahfouz's Midaq Alley. We had a great discussion on: Egypt before WWII vs. after WWII, and What was wrong with Egyptian culture? and Was it irreversibly "infected" by some of the negative aspects of Western influence?Dad: I am scanning and emailing to you a form or two, plus Boettcher's (our health center) recommendations for the area's chiropractors. Dr. Jonathon or Tony can see if they know any of them (or let us know if they're any good). Also, of course everyone at Dr. Jonathon's can read this blog! It's for all family and friends.
Mom: What's the deal with my immunizations? Will I take care of that when I'm home in P-Town?
Sorry I've been so swamped. 1) I never got a tangible assessment/report from Kathy Gillis. 2) I have a link for you in Comments. 3) I will scan and email to you (for Dr. Liedel) the pertinent documents later tonight.
Aaron: Have you been swimming, playing soccer, or doing karate? Because I have done a little bit of all of those here. My friend Eliza has a black belt.
Luke: I need answers to four things: are you, in your own opinion, succeeding in football; have you made friends that are girls; do you know anyone on student council; and what Class of '07 grads have people at Jesuit talked about and why?
Grandma Carole: Sammi and I - well, our room has turned into an informal lounge. Everyone has started to come in here to hang, do homework, and tell their life stories. For your sake, I promise that I am kicking them out at 11:30 tonight and I will be asleep before midnight.
Becca and Katie: Don't know if you'll read this, but what classes are you guys taking?
(Becca is at U of O Honors and Katie is at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York.)
